Course Description

This course explores the intersection of sociology and technology syllabus, with a particular focus on how technological advancements impact society. It covers key sociological concepts, social structures, and the dynamic relationship between society and technology. Students will analyze how technological changes influence social norms, values, and the broader cultural landscape of Nepal.

Course Objectives

The primary objective is to familiarize students with the discipline of sociology and help them understand the impact of technology on society. Students will gain insight into the relationship between the individual, society, and culture, with a focus on analyzing Nepalese society and culture in a technological context.

Course Contents

Unit 1: Basic Concepts of Sociology (6 Hrs.)

  • Definition, nature, and scope of sociology
  • Relationship of sociology with other social sciences

Unit 2: Organizing Social Life (6 Hrs.)

  • Population size and distribution
  • Culture and community
  • Norms, values, status, and roles
  • Social institutions: Marriage, family, kinship, and groups

Unit 3: Social Systems & Social Stratification in Nepalese Society (9 Hrs.)

  • Social processes and socialization
  • Social and cultural change in Nepal
  • Factors influencing social and cultural change in Nepal
  • Caste, ethnicity, gender, and religion-based stratification
  • Ecological stratification
  • National integration: historical processes of nationhood, cultural integration (language, rituals, and customs)

Unit 4: Society and Technology (12 Hrs.)

  • Technological society and its evolution
  • Technological changes in the Third World context, particularly Nepal
  • Social and cultural bases of technological change
  • Diffusion of innovation: processes and patterns
  • Consequences of technological development on Nepalese society
  • Ethical responsibilities of computer professionals

Unit 5: Research in Social Science (12 Hrs.)

  • Introduction to research in social sciences
  • Research methods: qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods
  • Data collection techniques: interviews, focus group discussions, observation
  • Research proposal: components, objectives, research design, hypothesis formulation, sampling, and data collection
  • Research report writing and presentation
  • Software tools for social science research

Teaching Methods

The course will employ a variety of teaching methods including lectures, group discussions, case studies, guest lectures, research projects, assignments, and examinations (both written and oral). The faculty will select appropriate teaching strategies based on the specific needs of each topic.

Evaluation
